Hi, I’m Sam Matla.
I’m a New Zealand-based entrepreneur who’s obsessed with growing businesses, especially in the online course & coaching space.
Unlike other gurus, I’ve actually walked the walk. Prior to CourseThrive, I founded EDMProd, which quickly grew to become one of the most popular online course companies in the electronic music production space. I’m still involved with this business as it continues to grow and expand.
Since then, I’ve helped other course creators & coaches generate millions from their products & services with better marketing systems. If you know your course or service is damn good but you’re not getting the sales you want, let’s talk.
When I created my first online course (almost a decade ago), my “strategy”—if you can even call it that—was simple and stupid.
“If you build it, they will come.”
I focused all my energy and efforts on building an amazing online course under the assumption that it would just sell itself.
That people from all around the world would magically stumble upon my course sales page and click buy.
Obviously that didn’t happen.
In fact, I had to give away the course for free to gain initial traction and get some testimonials and reviews (fortunately, it was a success in the end—but that’s a story for another day).
Now, I’m willing to bet that you’re not as green as I was.
You’re making sales. You’ve got a course that converts. Maybe you’re pulling in 6 figures. Maybe just under. Maybe you’re pulling in 7.
You know that nailing the marketing piece is essential to making more sales and growing your business.
But the truth is, your course business is almost certainly under-optimized. You’re likely leaving very easy money on the table.
Here are 5 reasons why.
Scroll down your Facebook feed for 5 mins and you’ll come across guru after guru promising that their specific marketing strategy will do wonders for your business.
Maybe it’s an evergreen webinar guru.
Maybe it’s someone who’s an expert at Facebook ads and spends millions every month.
Or maybe it’s a web designer who tells you that the only thing standing between you and more sales is the design of your sales page.
Regardless of whether you buy from these gurus or not, the cumulative pressure that it puts on you to “do everything and anything” is insane.
And so you try to do it all.
You set up Facebook ads, run webinars, create a Facebook group, try to learn web design, try to improve your copywriting, learn all the technical stuff, run social media campaigns, pay influencers…
But this rarely works. You spread yourself too thin. You can’t truly invest the time into one marketing channel and really scale it up.
It’s important that you reverse this, and find the 1-3 things that will truly move your business forward (we’ll get to this later).
Before you have a go at me, know that I have nothing against building lifestyle businesses. They’re great. The Four Hour Work Week changed my life too.
But most course creators I talk too, when prodded, will admit that they’d rather work some extra hours and make more money.
Personally, I built the lifestyle business. I got to the point where I could work less than 10 hours a week.
You know what happened?
I got really fricken bored. I hated it.
If you’re an entrepeneur at heart, then you want to grow. You want to scale. You want to build something bigger.
And to do that, you need to make sales.
That means that, while building automated, evergreen funnels in your business is an important and useful thing to do (we actually help you create them for your business inside CourseScale), it should come secondary to actively trying to make sales through promotions, partnerships, and other key revenue-generating activities.
As a solo course creator/entrepeneur, it’s easy to get caught inside the day-to-day running of your business.
Building out new marketing campaigns, updating your course, responding to customer support, showing up. You know the drill.
The problem with this is that it becomes difficult to take a step back and look at your business from a birds-eye view.
When you do manage to do that, you’ll be able to find obvious opportunities to generate more cash. That’s usually why we’re able to increase clients’ revenue so quickly—we can see things that they don’t. We help them identify those things and then execute on them.
Most course creators I talk to are course creators first, entrepeneurs and business owners second.
If you’re like most people who build an online course business, you focus heavily on building the most amazing course you can. You want to help your students. You’re passionate.
The marketing & business stuff you learn by necessity. Maybe you find it fun and exciting, maybe you don’t.
But this is one reason why you’re probably not making the sales you should. Your course is great, but the messaging surrounding it, the copy, the pricing, and how you’re presenting it is subpar.
Do you have a marketing calendar built out for your online course biz?
If you answered no, then I’ve got some good news and bad news.
The bad news is that you are leaving stacks of money on the table.
The good news is that you have the opportunity to now make stacks of money.
Like I mentioned in reason #2, most course creators focus too much on building a lifestyle business, building automated funnels, making everything run on “autopilot.”
And as I mentioned, this stuff is important. You want to have what I call an Automated Course Sales System (ACSS).
But the marketing calendar comes first. It’s your best chance at generating sales that you can then invest in other parts of your business to scale it even further (or take home more $ if you prefer to keep your biz lean).
You need to know exactly which promotions you’re running and when. You need to know what if you’re running an Easter sale, New Years sale, Summer sale, Black Friday, birthday sale… you get the idea.
By building this out, and systemizing the execution of it, there’s a high chance you’ll be able to double your revenue over the next 12 months (no exaggeration).
So, you know what the problems are. You know why your course business isn’t where it should be. But maybe you’re stuck on the next step.
Here’s where CourseThrive comes in with our CourseScale program.
We’ll help you rapidly increase your course sales within the next 90 days while setting your business up for long-term, sustainable growth.
We’ll work with you to find the already existing profit centers hidden inside your business (the closest thing to instant money printing).
These are easy wins. Usually things that are hard to see when you’re deep inside your business. We take the big-picture view, analyze your entire business, and identify the biggest win.
We start by doing a detailed, systematic review of your business to uncover these hidden opportunities. This includes an onboarding call, detailed questionnaire for you to fill out, and a 90-min workshop call.
Following this, we’ll create a personalized 90-day execution plan for you and your business. This will include key goals, objectives, and step-by-step implementation plans for maximizing revenue and profit going forward—starting with the easiest, biggest win.
Note: depending on your current revenue numbers, there’s a high chance that you will make your CourseScale investment back within the first 30 days.
We’ll coach you to confidently execute on the 1-3 things that will grow your sales over the next 90 days more than anything else.
You’ll take the customized execution plan we’ve made for you, and we’ll help you implement it.
This includes a 1-on-1 call every week + email/video feedback inbetween. The focus here is rapid execution, and we’re here to guide you, remove bottlenecks, and give you the tools and training you need to win.
After you’ve gained some quick wins and nailed the high ROI opportunities, it’s time for us to systemize them so you can continue generating sales over the next 12 months and beyond.
This is where we’ll help you build out your marketing calendar so you can run wildly profitable promotions without the huge time cost AND without burning your audience out.
Our goal is to have you come away after the 90 days knowing exactly what you need to do to sustain and grow your new revenue numbers. Your business will already be transformed, so now it’s time to take it even further.
